The Energy Transition Needs Strong Connections: The Rhine-Main Link

To secure the energy supply of tomorrow, powerful and sustainable infrastructure projects are needed. The Rhine-Main Link is a central building block: it enables the transport of regeneratively generated wind power from Lower Saxony to Hesse, thus contributing to the implementation of the energy transition.

Since July 2025, our hydrogeologists have been investigating the hydrogeological properties of the subsoil along the 570-kilometer route of the Rhine-Main Link, which stretches from Mannheim to Oldenburg. The data collected will be incorporated into a three-dimensional subsoil model, which will serve as the basis for the transition to the construction phase.

The work includes hydraulic tests such as pumping, infiltration, and seepage tests, as well as packer tests to determine even the smallest hydraulic permeabilities. Valve tests such as slug, drill, stem, and pulse tests, as well as water pressure tests, are also being conducted.

Thanks to a well-coordinated team of around 20 experts, up to 25 tests per week are being carried out at measurement points in southern and northern Germany – even in partly difficult-to-access terrain.
